I. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

On December 8, 1963, Tien Educational Center was founded by the Jesuit Fathers in Taiwan, for the purpose of elevating the standard of cultural and artistic activities in this country. It was named after the first Chinese Cardinal Bishop Tien Ken-Hsin. It has served numerous college and university students and young citizens of this country since its foundation.

Cardinal Tien
During the past three decades, its role in the progress of society in many respects, especially in the cultural and spiritual aspects, has been widely recognized. During this period, the funding came partly from the salaries earned by the priests who taught at universities, and partly from donations by Catholics abroad. But these resources have dried up for many reasons; the priests are getting old and many of them have either retired from teaching or passed away, moreover, the "economic miracle" of Taiwan tells our friends in foreign countries that financial help is not needed anymore in this country. It is, indeed, time we started helping ourselves.

In order that our activities may continue to serve the needs of society, a board of trustees was organized and the establishment of this Foundation was approved by the Ministry of Education on April 26, 1990. On November 12, 1994, we were conferred the "Award for Communities of Contribution on Social Education" by the Minister of Education, Kuao Wei-fan. Such an honor implied public recognition of our effort, and it has also brought us enormous encouragement.

II. ORGANIZATIONS AND THEIR PAST ACHIEVEMENTS

Tien Cultural Foundation is composed of four organizations: the Young Writers Club, Mountain Service Corp., the Audio-Visual Center, and Cultural Activity Division.

1. The Young Writers Club Our goal is to train young writers and promote a ultural environment for youth. We also want to widen their view of life by offering literature and artist courses, publishing relevant books, sponsoring or providing space for relevant activities.

  • Achievements For 34 years in the history of this Young Writers Club, five thousand students have taken part in its activities. Of them, about two hundred are now regular contributors of published articles, many of them have also become very popular or outstanding writers.

2. Mountain Service Corp. The organization was founded on July 1, 1967. Serving the aborigines and learning from their cultures are our objectives. We recruit college and university students to go during school vacations into remote and far-off areas of the mountainside to make friends with the aborigine families. With an attitude of earnest respect and willingness to learn, these students develop a relationship of mutual understanding with the aborigines, and therefore contribute to cultural communication on both sides.

  • Accomplishments In the past years, we have trained thousands of young students who carried heavy loads of medicine, books and magazines on their back into the remote mountainside, or the aborigine communities in the urban districts, to help the aborigine youth with their school work and to provide spiritual food and medical care to the residents. Through various designed activities, e.g. legal consultation, the farming practice, etc., the aborigines gain more knowledge of the reality of the society and thereby increase their capability in adapting themselves with it. Meanwhile, these students have found self-fulfillment and have grown in both personality and character. In January 1994, United News Cultural Foundation bestowed to us the "Primal Award of Social Service," which has brought great animation for us.

3. The Audio-Visual Center We offer material and activities for art appreciation. All the facilities needed for viewing and thousands of original copies of classic movies, operas, ballets, Chinese operas and religious tapes* etc. video tapes, slides and cassettes are available for rent.

  • Accomplishments We have offered countless speeches, seminars and shows concerning western and oriental art, architecture, music, movies, photography* etc., with topics such as "The Post-modern Phenomena of Art," "Western Ideas of Architecture," "The History of Modern Chinese Painting," "Modern Illustration," and so on. These activities contribute to both the lifting of the quality of life and the promotion of art education. The center has been chosen as the location for the ceremony of the Catholic Golden Torch Award twice.

4. Cultural Activity Division We are pioneer among private organizations which hold and promote art activities systematically. Our present chief work is to hold activities of arts and medical care for the silver-haired race and to maintain and take charge of our site for cultural activities. We have a large hall with seating for 500, meeting rooms and classrooms for 30, 40, 50 and 80 seat, which are well-equipped. The site is open for other groups to rent beside our own activities.

  • Accomplishments For more than thirty years, we have been holding activities of speeches, film appreciation, concerts, art exhibitions, academic seminars and workshops for writing, which have appealed to numerous college and university students and young people with work. Many students have held their activities to welcome freshmen or to farewell graduates here; this place has been become a part of their memory of youth with tears and laughter, and has contributed to their rowth toward maturity. Now the phenomenon of aging population emerges in our society; therefore, our present aim is to help elders enjoy themselves after retirement and live a healthy, comfortable, fulfilled life with respect, and we will continue such effort in the future.

III. OUR FUTURE PLANS

  1. Renovation of facilities and classrooms to keep up with the times.
  2. Expand the scope of services to include housewives, children and senior citizens from our neighborhood.
  3. Recruiting volunteers from all walks of life so that both our society and the volunteers will benefit from the experiences.
  4. Replenish the fund by holding bazaars and other fund-raising activities.
