| I. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND On December 8, 1963, Tien Educational Center was founded by the Jesuit Fathers in Taiwan, for the purpose of elevating the standard of cultural and artistic activities in this country. It was named after the first Chinese Cardinal Bishop Tien Ken-Hsin. It has served numerous college and university students and young citizens of this country since its foundation. |
|
| During the past three decades, its
role in the progress of society in many respects, especially in the cultural and spiritual
aspects, has been widely recognized. During this period, the funding came partly from the
salaries earned by the priests who taught at universities, and partly from donations by
Catholics abroad. But these resources have dried up for many reasons; the priests are
getting old and many of them have either retired from teaching or passed away, moreover,
the "economic miracle" of Taiwan tells our friends in foreign countries that
financial help is not needed anymore in this country. It is, indeed, time we started
helping ourselves. In order that our activities may continue to serve the needs of society, a board of trustees was organized and the establishment of this Foundation was approved by the Ministry of Education on April 26, 1990. On November 12, 1994, we were conferred the "Award for Communities of Contribution on Social Education" by the Minister of Education, Kuao Wei-fan. Such an honor implied public recognition of our effort, and it has also brought us enormous encouragement. |

II. ORGANIZATIONS AND THEIR PAST ACHIEVEMENTS Tien Cultural Foundation is composed of four organizations: the Young Writers Club, Mountain Service Corp., the Audio-Visual Center, and Cultural Activity Division. 1. The Young Writers Club Our goal is to train young writers and promote a ultural environment for youth. We also want to widen their view of life by offering literature and artist courses, publishing relevant books, sponsoring or providing space for relevant activities.
2. Mountain Service Corp. The organization was founded on July 1, 1967. Serving the aborigines and learning from their cultures are our objectives. We recruit college and university students to go during school vacations into remote and far-off areas of the mountainside to make friends with the aborigine families. With an attitude of earnest respect and willingness to learn, these students develop a relationship of mutual understanding with the aborigines, and therefore contribute to cultural communication on both sides.
3. The Audio-Visual Center We offer material and activities for art appreciation. All the facilities needed for viewing and thousands of original copies of classic movies, operas, ballets, Chinese operas and religious tapes* etc. video tapes, slides and cassettes are available for rent.
4. Cultural Activity Division We are pioneer among private organizations which
hold and promote art activities systematically. Our present chief work is to hold
activities of arts and medical care for the silver-haired race and to maintain and take
charge of our site for cultural activities. We have a large hall with seating for 500,
meeting rooms and classrooms for 30, 40, 50 and 80 seat, which are well-equipped. The site
is open for other groups to rent beside our own activities.
